A
Method for Assessing Mental Health Concerns in
Pre-school
Children
Welcome to the home page for ABLE. Behavioral and emotional difficulties can
make it difficult for children to benefit from early childhood programs. Parents
and teachers sometimes have concerns about a child but don’t know whether the
concern is serious enough to take action. Using ABLE can help.
ABLE is a parent and teacher-report
measure designed for early identification of problems of adjustment among
children in pre-kindergarten program and is administered in 2 stages. The first
stage or level inquires about 10 concerns reported commonly in pre-school
settings and poses a set of questions that aids in determining severity if one
of those concerns is reported. The second part is used to provide more specific
information if the concerns expressed in Level 1 are severe enough for follow
up. ABLE was developed and initially
normed on a sample of over 500 children in randomly selected public sponsored
pre-k programs in 5 states who were followed longitudinally in pre-k and
kindergarten.
